The Department of State has launched new Travel Advisories and Alerts to make it easier for U.S. citizens to access clear, timely, and reliable safety and security information about every country in the world. We need to be safe and prepared when traveling. It's all too easy to "figure it out when we get there."

Given the fact conditions can change rapidly in a country at any time, there are several ways to receive all travel advisories and alerts. One way is the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) which is a free service to allow U.S. citizens and nationals traveling and living abroad to enroll their trip with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate.
To create an account with STEP, go to https://STEP.state.gov

Provide the details of your specific trip, including dates of arrival and departure for the countries you choose.

We will email you new Travel Advisories and Alerts as soon as we issue them, so be sure to provide an email address that you can access during your trip.

Three reasons to enroll:
(1) if you're TRAVELING Internationally, get travel alerts & warnings
(2) if you're STAYING at HOME, get alerts & warnings
(3) create an account if you travel frequently. Be sure to read: The Benefits of Enrolling.

In addition, make sure you have a copy of your passport scanned so that if it goes missing, you can retrieve it electronically, which will make it easier to get an emergency passport.

Before any travel abroad, we encourage you to check our safety and security information for your destination at travel.state.gov/destination.

You can see the world at a glance on our color-coded map: https://travelmaps.state.gov/TSGMap/

U.S. State Department’s new Travel Warning System has 4 levels of advisory (ranked from low to high):

Level 1 BLUE Exercise Normal Precautions

Level 2 YELLOW Exercise Increased Caution

Level 3 ORANGE Reconsider Travel

Level 4 RED Do Not Travel
